3 Embalmer CEUs: September 27 with Shun Newbern news featured breaking news

Shun Newbern presents the course titled Challenges for the 21st Century Funeral Service Professional covering three areas of expertise namely; Keys to a Successful Viewing, Problems Associated with the Autopsy Case and Something Old, Something New – Mastery Skills.

Program Description:Regardless if the family has purchased a casket or have selected direct cremation with a cardboard container; their final viewing should be pleasant and successful for all parties involved.  We will examine the various embalming problems that are often seen. The first session, Keys to a Successful Viewing, will remind the attendees of the psychological effects that an open casket has on a grieving heart and how our role in that experience is extraordinary.  Too often embalmers minimize the significance of the embalming procedure, and this may lead to rush or delay embalming.  The viewing, for many cultures, is the most important aspect of the funeral planning process.  If the viewing does not go well, the service will not go well.   We will demonstrate basic and more advanced embalming techniques, and discuss the significant impact these procedures have on the family and the viewing process.
During the second session of the presentation entitled “Problems Associated with the Autopsy Case”, we examine issues associated with embalming autopsy decedents.  This session will cover a much higher standard of care, and instruct participants how to deal with a variety of challenges related to the embalming process including:

  • Legal functions that carry liability when decedents are not properly embalmed or treated for leakage, odour or shipping.
  • Dealing with Tissue gas, discoloration and early decomposition
  • Restoring natural contour of the face and hands of the decedent.
  • Setting higher standards of performance when communicating with the family
  • Improving service and results associated with embalming.

The third session entitled, Something Old, Something New – Mastery Skills, is designed to elevate the skills of the practitioner in decedent preparation from the feature setting to removing odor.  This session will emphasize the basic embalming skills, and reinforce the importance of continued education and expanding the practitioner’s reportage of education resources.

Ryan McLane Elected President at 99th FSABC Conference

Ryan McLane Elected President at 99th FSABC Conference featured breaking news Kelowna, BC - April 7, 2011

The joint conference with the Cemetery and Crematorium Association of BC was another great success and well attended by funeral directors, cemeterians, and funeral industry suppliers.

Ryan McLane, General Manager of Greater Victoria’s First Memorial Funeral Services, Crematorium and “Garden of Memories” was elected last week as President at the 99th Annual General Meeting of the Funeral Service Association of British Columbia.  McLane, 37, represents the emerging generation of new funeral professionals who are committing themselves to the principal of “excellence in funeral service” by bringing together all the elements of funeral professionals across the spectrum.

Upon completion of his secondary education in Imperial, Saskatchewan, Ryan entered the University of Regina graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology in 1995.

It was during his university days that Ryan became a part time employee of  Helmsing Funeral Chapels in Regina. Upon graduation, wondering how he might best utilize his new found education he took a full time position with Helmsing Funeral Chapel and under the tutelage of Hewitt Helmsing and his staff, graduated with distinction from the Saskatchewan Funeral Service Association Education Program in 1997 as a fully licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director.

McLane soon followed Helmsing to Vancouver Island where he became Operations Manager of First Memorial Funeral Services subsequently becoming Manager in 1997.  In 2000, he became the Manager of First Memorial in Vancouver and later was appointed General Manager at Ocean View Funeral Home in Burnaby before returning to Victoria to his current position with First Memorial as General Manager of the First Memorial locations in Victoria and Saanich including Crematorium and the “Garden of Memories” Cremation Cemetery.

McLane has seen first hand the changing face of funeral service and became an integral part of a new team of leadership working to raise the image of funeral service in British Columbia by continuing a process of creating a cohesive working profession through a strong, united, comprehensive and progressive Association.

McLane said, “ funeral service needs to embrace the wave of change and funeral professionals must continue to be creative when working with families to provide whatever type of ceremony or remembrance that a family is requesting with families seeking celebration of life ceremonies, a focus on catering rather than viewing, the use of the Reception Room rather than the chapel while still embracing the traditional aspects of funeral service as it relates to the funeral ritual within certain ethnic and religious communities.”

“With the constitutional changes, the FSABC now offers a vehicle for providers of all funeral service goods and services being brought together to provide a greater synergy for effectively serving the needs of our various and unique communities” said McLane.

The recruitment, training and retention of a strong pool of funeral professionals is another goal that McLane hopes to achieve and in doing, being reminded of the words of the former very successful C.E.O of General Electric, Jack Welch who said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others”. McLane said these words have taken on a greater meaning with him in his pursuit of his professional life and as a mentor for upcoming trainees.

Ryan has been active in the community, working with various Hospice, Community and Church Groups and Associations as well as serving with the Vancouver Police Victim Services Unit while residing in Vancouver.

When asked what might best describe his overall goal for the Association, McLane says the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change that you want to see in the world”.

Telephone Etiquette & Best Practices For the Funeral Home & Cemetery

The Telephone is the lifeline of the funeral home and cemetery.  Most all first calls, price shopper inquiries and general business is conducted over the phone.

The goal of this seminar is to heighten the sensitivities and improve the abilities of individuals in our profession concerning basic telephone skills and etiquette.  More business opportunities are lost due to poor phone service and poor telephone treatment than poor products.  Meeting our clientele by phone can be very successful or just the opposite.

After attending this seminar, attendees will be better equipped to professionally interact with the public, create additional credibility for the firm and smooth crisis call situations.

FSABC President, Justin Schultz

Preparing a body for the grave would be enough to send shivers down most people’s spines.

Not so for funeral director and embalmer Justin Schultz.

“I don’t have any level of discomfort with it,” says Schultz, 35. “It all relates back to providing service to a family that’s lost a loved one.”

Schultz, who works at Valley View Funeral Home in Surrey, dismisses the notion that embalmers are comfortable only around dead people. In fact, he spends the bulk of his time guiding families through the difficult period that follows a death.

“I think we get a unique insight into people’s lives,” he said. “We get to help them add a sense of peace to a pretty disorganized and otherwise stressful time.”

Approved Funeral Director CEUs Available Online

Approved Funeral Director CEUs Available Online news VICTORIA, BC, CANADA, July 17, 2010 Funeral Futurist, Robin Heppell has been granted approval by Consumer Protection British Columbia  for two Internet-related, funeral home focused continuing education programs. Heppell will cut through all of the hype about Google and Social Media and instruct attendees how Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter can be used by funeral directors to promote their funeral homes at little or no cost. These programs will be delivered Live Online so that attendees will get the benefit of instructor interaction and also enjoy the convenience of participating in the sessions from the comfort of their office or home.
http://www.FuneralDirectorCEUs.com

Heppell has developed two 3 hour sessions that are based on research, training, testing, and actual case studies from funeral homes over the past four years.

"These programs are not going to be a bunch of theory - nor are they going to be taught by someone who has never sat across from bereaved family." Heppell stated. "I see more and more people in the industry talking about Social Media and hyping it up and not sharing just practical steps to use it as a tool to build relationships - relationships are what our profession has been built on, maybe the tools today are different but the principle of relationships has not changed in over 100 years."

These sessions will be delivered on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 via live online webinar. There are convenient times for both funeral professionals in the East as well as the West and all points in between.

Here are the details about each program:

Social Media & Funeral Service: Making Sense of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
With Rapid growth and popularity of online Social Media networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube , many Funeral Directors are unsure what is the best way to harness the power of Social Media for their funeral home. In this 3 hour program, Heppell will provide an overview of the most popular social networks and share his Best Practices on using them to building relationships without crossing the line of social activities and business. The objective of this training is to introduce the most popular social media networks to Funeral Directors and teach them to implement community outreach activities in the most effective yet efficient manner possible.

Understanding Google: The External & Internal Effects on Your Funeral Home
Since Google is the world's most popular website (and also most used search engine) and coupled with the fact that the majority of Internet users use the Internet to research local businesses first before making offline purchases, it is important for funeral homes to understand how Google sees their funeral home. Heppell has created this 2 part session that will first look at how Google sees your funeral home from a search engine perspective and will include Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies, creating and optimizing Google Maps Listings and give you an introductory look at Google AdWords (Pay Per Click) advertising. In the second part of the program Heppell will introduce you to Google' s suite of free, online tools.

Heppell remarked, "There are many misconceptions about how the search engines like Google work and how they rank Funeral Homes. In this session I will clear the air and provide simple tools and analysis that can preformed to see why one funeral home ranks higher than another in Google."
