Duties and responsibilities of a funeral professional:

  • Provides support to the bereaved during initial stages of their grief.
  • Arranges and directs funeral ceremonies.
  • Arranges for transfer of the deceased from the place of death.
  • Prepares the body according to the wishes of the survivors and requirements of the law.
  • Secures information for legal documents.
  • Registers death and other legal papers.
  • Assists survivors with details for filing claims for death benefits.
  • Helps individuals adapt to changes in their lives following a death through post-death counselling and support group activities.

ABOUT THE BC FUNERAL SERVICES APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The BC Funeral Services Apprenticeship Program is a formal training program that involves:

  • Full time employment
  • Learning how to do a task by performing it on the job
  • Learning why a task is done that way by taking related classroom instruction and online study modules
  • Hands-on training performed under the direct supervision of a licensee
  • Industry-driven training program that promotes a skilled work force

To begin the funeral services program – You must FIRST obtain FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT at a funeral home AS AN APPRENTICE FUNERAL DIRECTOR / EMBALMER. Work experiences are documented by students in student logbooks and case study records and validated by the student’s employer / mentor. An APPRENTICESHIP is paid work-based training combined with post-secondary education.

Apprenticeship is a three-way contract between an apprentice, the apprentice’s employer and the Industry Training Authority of British Columbia (ITABC).

The Funeral Service Association of British Columbia is the Approved Designated Training Service Provider for BC Funeral Services Apprenticeship Programs.
