BC Council For Families: Sharing Grief With Children, by Nancy Reeves – The most significant factor in how a child deals with grief, is how the important adults in his or her life are dealing with the loss themselves. Children will model how they express grief and how they behave on what their adult role models are doing. Often, adults feel that they need to control themselves around children, “be strong for the kids,” but this sends children the message that they too need to suppress their grief. By sharing our grief with children, we teach them that strong emotions are normal and will not harm us if we express them and grieve the loss of things and people that are important to us. Naturally, children of different ages will understand death in different ways.
