Apprenticeship Program – Tips for Success for the Apprentice

  • Inform yourself about what is required. See Required Abilities for Apprentices and do an honest assessment of your mental and physical abilities. Identify and address any gaps before you pursue an apprenticeship.
  • Take the time and do your research to find the right employer and work environment for you. See the Finding an Apprenticeship section in this HR Toolkit for more information.
  • Carefully review the information received in the Registration Handbook. Ensure you understand your responsibilities and requirements in regards to training commitments, payments, timeframes, tracking and reporting requirements.   • Actively participate in and successfully complete the required on-the-job and in-class training.
  • Allocate and invest the appropriate amount of time and energy to study for each course and stay current on lessons and assignments.
  • Keep track of your progress in the Student Log Book and have signed by your mentor at the appropriate stages.
  • Work with your employer to develop a training plan and ensure your understanding of training and work place expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with your mentor and ask for feedback on your progress.

  • Consistently present a professional image and demeanour in keeping with the dignity of the profession.
